100 questions for webmasters

template by mouseling, blank version is here!

note: orginally finished 2026.05.29, re-proofread and edited at the time of posting!

1. Please introduce yourself.
hi! im sym and i like making comics, animations, and other things :)
2. How long have you been making websites?
since 2022, so 4 years! but I had made wysiwyg sites before that.
3. And what got you into the hobby?
originally, I wanted my own oc site. I'd seen other people do it, but was never able to make something I liked! eventually I ended up on neocities, but i didnt start for another i think 2 years. now I love having my own space on the internet. (still haven't finished that oc section yet...)
4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
one that's kinda just an amalgamation! a personal site that really shows off the person who made it
5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
I usually make a sketch mock-up, just to have an idea of what I want something to look like— im a very visual person, so having a visual idea to work off of is helpful. for the 2.0 version of my site, I worked on it in full html before adding the css later. I was too lazy to work on the css because that's more time consuming for me.
6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
Kale, Nami, Sylvia, Em, and many more!
7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
being able to see it come together! I get really proud seeing the fruits of my labor
8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
anything more complicated than just putting text on a page (using javascript, making a fancy layout, etc...). I struggle a lot when I wanna add something special or unique and the code doesn't wanna play nice with me. though outside of that I struggle with css in the sense that I don't often have the energy to troubleshoot structuring a new layout when I need one (currently procrastinating three two different layout designs I need to work on for sub-sites)
9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
I use the same layout for ease of use and consistency. but certain parts of my site (like an oc section or art gallery) I want to be a little different so they feel like their own 'room' of sorts. above reason why they're not done LOL
10. How confident are you with CSS?
I like to think I'm pretty good at it, it just takes a while for me to know what I want, so it takes a long time to adjust/set it up
11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
I hadn't run into it until this questionnaire! I think so... 🤔 but I'm always down to use more semantic html
12. What is your favourite HTML element?
<hr> :) I like using separators...
13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
if it's a page on a preexisting website, I usually have a template page that I copy and start filling in. if it's a new website, make an index page and start from there. once the structure is there, I make the css and then I use that css to start adding other pages!
14. Do you know JavaScript?
if you told me to build something, no. if you told me to edit something, also no. but can I touch it without screaming? maybe
15. How about PHP?
I know of it and have edited a template, but it goes over my head
16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
for consistency, yes. but it's kinda just what I feel in my heart in its vibe. I think people who have every page a different theme are REALLY cool, but I just don't have the bandwidth mentally to handle doing that.
17. Are you more focused on content or design?
content for sure. I think I wanted to make cool designs in the past, but my stamina for it has waned. nowadays, I prioritize the information, so the theme is almost consistent throughout my main site, and will have one theme on sub sites (outside of shrines)

if it wasn't for the artist side of me, I think my website would look like my blog (i kept it symple simple because I didn't know what theme to give it)

18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
I do! I own a few, but lately I've been consolidating, so I'll only have two for the foreseeable future. symliadoo.com and justiceave.com if you're curious!
19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
they're fun! I like em :)
20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
I don't know what this means 🧍

update: I have checked it. I think so!

21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
I have buttons! I have banners! I like em! I especially like buttons, I think having a mini 'flag' of sorts that represents your site and can travel around the internet to those who want to share you is sweet.
22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
I think they're nice but can be overwhelming. I'm selective with who I add to my net neighbors/netizens list, so it's not too wall-y. I only add people who are my friends or I actively visit, so yeah.
23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
I just 'started over' a year ago so probably the same, but I did consider a new theme that was even simpler than what I have now. unsure if I would do it or not, but if I ever start over I just might. less code to fight with the simpler it is. also I think by having a simpler site, it would challenge me to decorate the simplicity with 'stickers' littered to still encourage my creativity— being my space and all. focused on utility but always willing to still make it unique, if you will (considering doing this as I'm typing)
24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
YES, ALWAYS! EVERYONE IS SO CREATIVE!!
25. What text editor do you use?
used to use brackets, now I use phoenix code! I've used visual studio but I feel like it has too much bloat for me...
26. Why do you use that one?
in tandem with above, I just like typing everything with some minimal quality of life tools. I got lost in the sauce of the installing and terminal related things in vsc, and it just became overwhelming to work with. I also like seeing the preview updating while you're typing, makes it easier to edit quickly.
27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
On my web server, but sometimes I use catbox! (usually for bearblog, until I get around to getting a lifetime license).
28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
I think they both have their uses, and I'm actually moving to nekoweb soon. I'm a neocities alumni and proud of it, and am moving back to a static site host long term as it is more sustainable for me. the only reason I'm not going back to neocities is because nekoweb's subscription is cheaper, and you can pay upfront for a year. if not for that, I would have just went back to neocities. i miss the timeline, but I might just do what a net neighbor did and upload the main page and type what I changed (and the link sends you directly to my website). I don't see why they can't coexist! competition is good and give people options :>

edit: im on nekoweb now! glad to be on something static again, cpanels are scary

29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
since I don't really have my art on there, less than 200mb. I'm trying to make sure that when I do add them that I keep the file sizes low any way I can without sacrificing the quality, as I want them to be nice enough to show off as a permanent gallery. I've come around to webp and it's getting more support, so I'm eventually going to convert my images to webp for long term.

(checked, the current version is 77.31mb. my estimate was kinda big LMAO)

30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
yep! I'm trying to also keep every major update rather than just editing one file forever. nice to have an archive backup!
31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
depends on what the site is for. if it's someone's say, blog, eh, it can be kind of boring, but a blog is for the content, not the aesthetic (most times). if it's someone's website and it's very visual, then it's really cool! they both have their merits, and I think I like highly visual sites when it's an artist that decorates their site.
32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
I try to keep a certain color theme going for consistency for both the website and myself on the back end. I picked strawberry pink (not the actual color, just what I relate it to the most) because it's a color I like using for myself. maybe a color that represents my soul idk. outside of that, you'll see green and blue, my childhood oc's colors, and the rainbow nav just to be cute. it's definitely very intentional and I spent a lot of time making sure they were easy on the eyes while still being colors I liked (and accessible. except for the pink but it's not on anything important)
33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
I think I've thought about quitting in the sense that I'd give up on making the site look nice, but I don't think I've ever thought about quitting as in never making/finishing my website. I think I'd always want to make it, it's more of a 'what am I willing to "sacrifice" to make it'.
34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
none I'm close with except for my best friend (net neighbors hi!! i consider you friends but idk if you do!!)! but he doesn't work on his site nearly as much as I do. so it's mostly solitary
35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
yes! mostly family, but they're not that invested into it
36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
no LOL

it takes me a while to make updates, and when I do work on it, some of it of it is adding new things, most of it is updating code (right now). I'd love to get to a point again where I'm not just cleaning up/updating code... but I'm very persnickety when it comes to how things look, which is why my theme is simple. I'd hate to put so much effort into a theme and then not like it after a few months. currently the update schedule is once every 6+ months. eventually I'd like to be updating it once a month, but life's been very busy for me lately and the energy to add new sections of the site that have a different layout is very low

37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
I think since the first stable version I've not changed it much, it's mostly just been updating to have more semantic html and other back end stuff. unless I 'downgrade' the design (aka simplify it) then it'll stay the same for a while. I don't have the patience to make it more heavily designed
38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
me and my hobbies! I like my hobbies a lot and want to explore them more in my own space. outside of some friends, I'm very insular about my interests and I want to be more open in a safe environment, hence the website!
39. Do you do web design professionally?
nope! don't want to. it's a hobby for me
40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
I think I used to want to, but now I definitely don't. I don't think I like doing gig work very much and can't imagine working as a dev in an office. I just like the straight html/css experience! (anything outside of that is mentally exhausting to figure out)

right now, I'm a library assistant! going back to school soon to finish my BA so i can go for my MI to be an archivist (or librarian). tempted to pursue being a mangaka, but don't have the stamina right now.

41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
nope! mostly discord. not opposed to doing it in the future, but I'm used to instant messaging platforms.
42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
yep! it's how I stay in connection with people. I admire those who have pulled the plug on their socials, but I don't think it's for me. however, I have been limiting my interaction with sns, as we all know it's not good for the mind. i curate my experience these days by utilizing rss and having curated feeds. but every now and again I end up on the reels or shorts or tiktok scroll
43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
yep! I've always used them since I think when msn messenger was a thing. it's my preferred form of contact. I'm usually accessible though discord.
44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
usually! I'm kinda into most things, primary indie pop and funk I think.
45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
I have one currently, and had plans to make another, but I'm actually just going to make it a subcategory of my site. its less overwhelming! though I did consider a different site using the other domain I'm keeping. unsure yet!
46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
it's about my hobbies so technically no! but if we were to umbrella it, it's technically one general topic: art and creative things!
47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
it's very hard for me to be anything other than myself, so I'd like to think that I present a 'living room' of sorts with my site and online presentation. open enough to come into my home (be personable), but not open enough that you know much about me without asking or looking for it (closed doors). the thought of constructing a persona that's not me feels weird (identity dissociation issues) so my artist persona is just me as well. though I do have ~~two~~ three fursonas. but they're pretty shrimple.
48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
not yet! but some folks I've talked to from being web neighbors are so coooool. want to talk 2 them more but I'm scared...
49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
I think so! sometimes I get frustrated but it's nbd. if anything it would be some minor tweaks to how css works, like changing some words cause sometimes changing the font/text is confusing depending on what you want to do
50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
DON'T ADD 500 DIVS I BEG. also don't put your entire css or js code in the html file unless it's necessary
51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
use semantic html and label your code so it's easier to find things. im tempted to label my code for the guy who gets nosy and wants to look at the source. just for fun <3
52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
I've been very strict about using semantic html on my website for this version. I want to be as accessible as I can be. no specific reason other than it's important to me
53. Do you consider different browsers?
I don't usually but sometimes I'll use chrome to check, cause I have noticed inconsistencies. I think most of what I make doesn't alter from browser to browser!
54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
Firefox. there's a free VPN now. privacy. the ability to choose. firefox on android has an adblocker. be free.
55. And what OS are you on?
windows (derogatory.)
56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
id consider linux if it were not for the fact that I am lazy and want the path of least resistance. I wanna use my computer, not build it. I would NEVER pick up an apple product again unless I was forced to for a specific thing. even then I'd consider not to. you won't catch me in those walled gardens
57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
YES and they always will be. I want them to be more mobile friendly (see #52)
58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
I hate it and I look at you unfavorably if you do it. I have sensitive ears and there is no regard for the ability to choose. the only time I don't care is if it's a non-eye strain gif. but I don't know if that counts
59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
I want to be in some one day! they're nice! id only be in a few though, not in it to be in every webring ever. maybe just ones I feel close to. I thought about making one but I don't feel like it
60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
I want to make some :) one day....

id have one for my ocs, and one for animal crossing, and pokemon, and tomodachi life, and and and—

I like when they're designed in mind with the theme of the thing, it's always SO fun to see how people make them (like an animal crossing new leaf shrine being in a theme that looks like a 3ds, for example)

61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
don't know and don't care! I'm just vibing, to be cringe is to be free.
62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
a finished one one that I think encapsulates...me! part of me is kind of finding myself through making it, and I don't think that work will ever be done, but I'd like to get to a point where I'm comfortable. I'd love to leave a little corner of the internet behind as a small indication that I existed
63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
yeessss

I design all my assets outside of smaller ones like buttons (except for my own). if someone made icons or symbols, I'd prefer to use them than make my own for utility's sake. but it's mostly mine!

64. What are your favourite resource sites?
Eggramen, Kalechips, Rarebit, etc etc etc
65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
opening all my html files and making sure they all are up to date even if I know that I haven't touched them 😭

also not finishing things and just rewriting/refining existing pages

66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
rather than learn html and css just learn as you make stuff. you pick stuff up quicker if you're doing it for your website (and it'll hold your interest more). it's a rite of passage to make it messy. however, when you have something stable, make a new index, and rewrite it by hand. this will not only reteach you what all the functions are, but it will also teach you what clean code should look like. you will find code that's not necessary and it is imperative that you weed it out.
67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
I put all primary styling in css, and inline style on pages that need that specific style. my methodology is keeping the code clean and accessible, and looking for a minor css code for a table in my about in the main style sheet makes me feel like it's bloated. if it is a lot of code, like my index responsive boxes, then I'll put it in the css under the 'page specific code' section, but if it's changing one or two things, it goes in the html file itself. this is also done if something conflicts with the css and is more important on that page specifically.
68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
I had to look this up and it sounds scary.
69. How about table-based layouts?
it's okay but a little bland for my tastes
70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
I thought about making a two column layout, but for me it's more trouble than it's worth. so whenever I think about it again I say it's the devil talking. don't mind it for others though. I think mine would be one column? it's easier
71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
css. always. unless the page is complicated in design but usually it's complicated in design because of the css LMAO. me and css have a love hate relationship.
72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
when I first made 2.0 I did a zero css frame, and then added it afterwards. I don't think I would though. as much as I loathe css we are family. I have considered a low-css theme though, similar to this blog!
73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
I only make layouts when absolutely necessary for the above reason. saddened to say I'm also not really that creative when it comes to making one, which is why mine is so simple
74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
intermediate. I know enough and also know when I'm in over my head and that there's just some knowledge that's above my pay grade.
75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
if I like it or find a cool element I will look at the code to see how they did it! if you're a net neighbor I've seen your source code >:3c
76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
crying trial and error. I mindlessly fiddled around with html and then had a web design class in college that really opened my eyes. at the time I was busy and couldn't take on a web project, but that didn't stop me from fiddling around with it. eventually I got better at learning what to do and copying others' code and making it my own. this one neocities user Nathub's site looked so cool at the time that I committed to making my own site then and there. w3schools is a good resource but I learn by getting my hands dirty
77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
sometimes but I try not to. I found out depending on what browser you're using it can break and I don't want that to happen. I've also run into situations where something was fine and then I went back to check later and it wasn't working anymore. less stress
78. Thoughts on floating elements?
no opinion!
79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
for text it's almost always px (haven't really figured out em yet except in one or two contexts), for images it's % unless I need it to be a specific width on the page.
80. Do you have a favourite font?
cabin! I found it while going through the google docs font directory and use it for most of my typing. if it's unavailable I usually use arial. I wish I could have a favorite fun font. I like quicksand but not enough to say it's my favorite
81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
hmmm only if it's a joint project or something like a best friend project. otherwise no. in the aspect of a joint project, I'm imaging a creative thing like a comic or multimedia project, or even a resource. with my best friend, it could be as simple as sharing a site to have a conjoined representation of both of us.
82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
I wouldn't say very often, but often enough! I love websurfing, but I seem to only ever do it when I'm supposed to be doing something else 😭
83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
yes! I actually need to organize them. I would be honored if someone liked my site enough to come back to it, and intentionally design my site so people can do so. the idea of going to a static archive doesn't interest me (which is why it's not a portfolio). an ever rotating museum with seasonal exhibitions is more apt!
84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
the things I've made to be put on display :) (to continue using the museum analogy)
85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
I got into modding my 3ds, I kinda wanna go back and add more stuff, maybe more game system modding in general. I've also thought about self hosting but I think this is over my head (re: path of least resistance). however, modding game systems (digitally and physically) to me feels like lengthening the lifespan of the device! I collect some things, but they aren't technically based. I don't wanna own a lot of tech I'm not using and had to talk myself out of getting a new 3ds to clean mod for literally no reason 🤣
86. How often and for how long are you online?
on instant messaging? most times I'm awake. on social media? not long, but it varies day to day. I'm a homebody, so online is really my only place when I'm not at work or running errands. if I'm not 'online' on sns, im engaging in hobbies (watching tv/youtube, playing games, listening to music, cleaning, etc). discord is my primary form of contact for my friends, so I'm usually online if not slightly afk
87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
me LOL. it's akin to the same way artists post their art to share with others online
88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
I also had to look this up. I still don't understand but it seems like I've been typing in xhtml standards already!
89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
no that's scary. even with javascript, if I want to do something fancy I copy someone else's code and plug and play my assets.
90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
I think they're cool but ultimately more work than it's worth for me to set it up. id rather just code the html pages by hand than troubleshoot (which is why I'm going back to a static site host)
91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
I do, for fun! number go up and alldat. I have a back end counter too, but that's just because I'm nosy to see where people are coming from. i had someone from the republic of moldova check out my website once. shout out moldova!!! without it, I wouldn't have known folks from germany really like visiting my site! I also use it to see what device they're using (which, to my surprise, is majorly computer monitors!).

edit: i ended up having to remove my hitcounter on my site though, nekoweb wasn't playing nice with it and i didnt feel like figuring out troubleshooting! alas

92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
using, no! I usually see some in passing, but I did consider joining the melonland forum. I wanna commit to being semi active, and haven't had the time for it.
93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
I used to do it RIGHT in neocities LMAO. now it's offline in my code editor. but if it's something like a long string of text, I usually write that in a document. I don't format it in html though, so I usually have to go back in and format by hand, which is why I more often than not just type directly into the editor.
94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
people have said I am cool yes. whether or not I am is debatable, but it's not up for me to decide, I suppose! I only think I'm cool when I'm doing a cool thing
95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
nah, she made that stuff with love. I love it because she did.

I have deleted some stuff for organization reasons, but I usually am pro preservation and archive my sites in between updates.

96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
leave an archive! I want people to know I existed
97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
this is kinda touching on some stuff I said in #47, but it depends. I share what I feel like but am also conscious enough to know some things are better off left off the internet. id rather share them with a friend than the entire world. I think because of this I come off as both an open book but also a closed vault. it's an interesting dynamic.
98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
if you don't know who my best friend is, it would be surprising (considering we're a packaged deal and link to each other all the time). HIS NAME IS DAN AND THIS IS HIS WEBSITE. best friend in the universe :D <3
99. And do you optimize the images on your website?
haven't yet, plan to reduce the size of the images and covert to webp!
100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
this was really fun! I decided to do this instead of moving my computer to my new desk, but I had always planned on doing this eventually, so win win! yay procrastination.... this took me about and hour and a half to do, given I took a break in the middle. I like answering questions :) I just like yapping in general and the questions were very unique.

edit: a month and some change in the future, i've finished proofreading and it was fun to reread :>
